The Status of Women is the Status of Democracy
Today is the pre-launch of the Summit for Democracy. It begins with a variety of cabinet level thematic events to spotlight key Summit themes, including women's rights as core democratic rights
Great things are happening in our democracy and global democracy starting today and continuing on Wednesday and Thursday. Think of the second Summit for Democracy as a convention to strengthen democracy attended not only by more than one hundred world leaders but officials from all walks of government life plus civil society organizations like nonprofits, media, and universities.
One of the highlights of today is an event entitled “The Status of Women is the Status of Democracy.” It begins at 1 pm ET and runs for an hour and half.
1:00 pm-2:30 pm ET today, Tuesday, March 28 – The pre-launch of the second Summit will host “The Status of Women is the Status of Democracy”
The event today on women’s rights builds directly on the December 2021 Summit for Democracy event “Empowering Prosperity: Advancing Women to Advance the Status of Democracy.”
“The Status of Women is the Status of Democracy” will highlight the imperative of gender equity and equality to democratic, rights-based societies and the universal importance of women’s civic and political participation. The discussion will also underscore one of the biggest barriers women and girls face: online harassment and abuse.
Further, the event will showcase the Global Partnership for Action on Gender-Based Online Harassment and Abuse, a 12-country initiative and commitment announced by the U.S. government at the first Summit.
