The Way Forward in Ukraine: Global Unity
Section III, Chapter 24 of the book "How to Save Democracy"
I know you have plenty of prose to read, so today, on the first anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, I am sending out a few words of poetry.
The four quotations below come from the last section of the book, “The Way Forward.”
They are from Mohamed Irfaan Ali, president of Guyana; Keith C. Mitchell, prime minister of Grenada; Gaston Browne, prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda; and Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine.
Ali, Mitchell, Browne, and Zelensky inspire us to global unity not only for reasons of altruism and magnanimity towards small democracies, like Ukraine, but also for the sake of beating back the brute forces of authoritarianism that threaten all of us. Here they are:
The global chain of freedom is only as strong as its weakest link.
MOHAMED IRFAAN ALI—President of Guyana
No democracy is safe unless all democracies are protected.
KEITH C. MITCHELL—Prime Minister of Grenada
Small countries cannot meet these challenges alone. Other large and richer states must help meet these challenges, or it will not be long before the deleterious effects end up on the shores of the rich, shaking the foundations of democracy globally.
GASTON BROWNE—Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda
By coming together, we will make the world freer, safer, and more democratic.
VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY—President of Ukraine
Amazing article, dad. It is very true. We must all work together to spread democracy and make sure that democracies in other countries thrive.
You are a fine fellow! I love this book project. I am finding myself inspired by the quotations every day. I’ll get you a copy soon.
